Zvonimir Durcevic

Course Objectives

We want to connect theory with practice: spread out over 7 weeks – a cohort of Scrum Masters together for 4 days onsite training, with lean coffee and mentoring every other week.

Individual and Team assignments in the “hands-on” phases.

What you will get

  • 7 weeks of intensive and hands-on learning with lots of tips and tricks (onsite & remote)
  • 2 veteran trainers with over 50 years of experience in the world of IT and Agile
  • Certificate by TechTalk

There’s not much that these two veterans of agile haven’t seen, heard or done. Between them they have over 50 years worth of experience in the world of IT and Agile. They’ve had management and developer roles, been trained and been trainers, delivered major products and minor projects, coached all levels of the organization – as well as each other. They’ve seen Agile done well and badly and they’ve stuck to their beliefs even if has meant having to move on.

01 Trainer

Zvonimir Durcevic

Zvonimir assists organizations on their transformation journeys in his role of an enterprise agile coach at TechTalk GmbH. He is passionate about Agile because he believes in people, their strengths, and innate resourcefulness. He firmly believes that people want to grow and excel in what they are doing and that creating an environment where people can self-organize and self-actualize is the primary responsibility of leaders on all levels. Since he first encountered Agile, he became deeply connected to agile values and principles (as stated in the manifesto for agile software development). In his opinion, they hold the key to understanding what Agile is all about.

Zvonimir has more than 16 years of experience in agile delivery, improving the value delivery capabilities of organizations and teams.

His journey to becoming an enterprise agile coach has had several stations where he gathered valuable experience in organizations as big as a few people and those with thousands of people. Working as a manager, he experienced firsthand the difference between management and leadership. And in addition, he realized that his passion lies in supporting the growth of people through his role as an agile coach.

Robert Finan

Underscored by the agile values and thinking, Robert has a pragmatic and undogmatic approach to improving software development – both the process itself and the product created. He coaches teams, is a sounding board for management, holds trainings, facilitates workshops and is creative and personable. He switches between the roles of consultant, coach and catalyst as the situation requires. Robert has introduced agility in many branches including telecommunications, banking, insurance, government and automotive.

Course Objectives

This workshop will take you on a journey through the exciting field of visual and collaborative modeling and mapping methods. By applying lightweight methods domain and software experts can collaboratively work their way through all three pillars of Domain-Driven Design: Strategic Design, Collaborative Modeling and Modeling in Software.

What you will get

  • Shaping the ubiquitous language around all three pillars of DDD
  • Collaborating about strategic DDD on the green- or brownfield
  • Enabling team autonomy and responsibility for models and components
  • Exploring project strategy and prioritizing epics and user stories
  • Aligning mental models (not only) in a context of Event Sourcing & CQRS
  • Defining and refining system behavior with Specification by Example
  • Designing business processes and sagas using four message types

"In a world of 1000 methods, Martin Schimak has managed to filter out the right ones, and even to improve them."

Angela Rumpl, kununu.com

Course Details

01 Target Audience

This workshop is really aimed at three groups – in no particular order:

  • Tech-savvy domain experts who are interested in better software projects
  • Agile business analysts who are interested in lightweight modeling methods
  • Software developers and architects who are interested in domain experts

02 Prerequisites

  • As a business stakeholder: a genuine interest in fundamental properties of software
  • As a software engineer: a genuine interest in understanding a business or new domain
  • Recommended: some work experience with cross-functional, Agile environments

03 Schedule

Together we will work with Domain Storytelling, Event Storming, Context Mapping, Impact Mapping, User Story Mapping, Event Modeling and Example Mapping. We will examine how such methods can be applied using the colors and building blocks defined with Storystorming and visually connect the dots.

In our first six sessions you will experience how to

  • Explore important domain scenarios with Domain Storytelling
  • Discover a big picture of your domain with Event Storming
  • Make the implicit power of definition explicit with Context Mapping
  • Manage your backlog with Impact Mapping and User Story Mapping
  • Design user journeys and software systems with Event Modeling
  • Refine user stories and acceptance criteria with Example Mapping

We will then spend two sessions exploring the important but often neglected topic of

  • Modeling (semi-) automated business processes and sagas

Using the four message types defined with Storystorming (which are based on the sentence types of human language), we will design a multi-step service collaboration and examine the options we have for autonomy and coupling in the software and in our organization.

04 Trainer

Martin Schimak

At the age of ten Martin fell in love with coding. A few years later he left his love and studied business and law. But only to find out: that’s awesome knowledge for designing business software! In the more than 15 years since then he talked to energy traders, telecom people, wind tunnel experts and many others.

This collaboration formed a hands-on domain “decoder” with a passion for Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and a soft spot for colored sticky notes! Martin is a trainer with experience in 50+ companies and 10+ countries. He regularly speaks at meetups and conferences across Europe and from time to time in the US.

05 Format

Each session lasts around 90+ minutes and will consist of knowledge transfer, a hands-on whiteboard activity, and time for questions and discussions.

Each participant receives all of the material shown by the trainer as a handout for personal use.

Course Objectives

Would you like to find out how to reduce bug-counts in production by nearly two orders of magnitude?

This course will explore an approach to development led by testing that includes the creation of “Executable Specifications” for the software that we create, automated tests that specify the behavioural intent of the code that we will write. Ideas based on a holistic Behaviour Driven Design (BDD) approach that can result in significantly higher quality software produced at a faster rate.

What you will get

  • Practice and understand the identification, creation and use of “Acceptance Tests” in the form of “Executable Specifications” to define the behaviour of a system.
  • Demonstrate the link between an effective, story-based, approach to requirements and practice the skills to map from story to Acceptance Test.
  • Practice the skills of effective story-writing using a combination of “Story Mapping” and “Specification by Example” techniques.
  • Understand how to create and develop a “Domain Specific Language” to support the creation and maintenance of “Executable Specifications”
  • Understand some of the techniques used to isolate the system under test and allow for the creation of effective, efficient test cases in complex systems.
  • Build Acceptance Tests, Executable Specifications, that are not compromised by changes in the system under test.

"Very well presented course, Dave is an expert in his field with many practical tips ."

Course Objectives

Approval testing is well known as a good approach for getting control over legacy code. It’s also known as “characterisation testing” or “Golden Master”.

In this course we’ll go through some typical legacy situations and how to get going with approval testing. You can achieve a high level of confidence in your tests for relatively little effort.

What you will get

  • Three shorter modules spread a week apart to better combine with your daily work
  • You will understand Approval testing techniques, tradeoffs and applicability
  • You will receive plenty of hands-on exercises and discussions
  • The programming language will be either Java or C# depending on the preference of participants

"Great Course. Structure, timing, balance between prepared information know-how and open questions was really nice and never boring. I think, each team should have someone, who has knowledge about Approval Testing. For me this course was a great choice."

Kristina Kasanicova, Test Engineer

Course Details

01 Target Audience

The course is aimed at both testers who do automation and developers with an interest in automated testing. In my experience you get the best results from your test automation efforts if people in both roles collaborate together. The programming language used will be mainly Java with a small amount of Python.

02 Trainer

Emily Bache

Emily is a Technical Agile Coach and long-term proponent of agile development practices like Test-Driven Development. She is a published author with Pluralsight and wrote „The Coding Dojo Handbook“ and recently a follow up book called „Technical Agile Coaching“.

Emily regularly speaks at conferences such as Craft, Agile Testing Days, ACCU, Europython and NDC. She is originally from the UK but now lives in Sweden.

03 Format

Since this is an online course:

  • We will take advantage of being able to split it up into three shorter modules spread a week apart.
  • It’s less disruption of your daily schedule, and gives you time between modules to try out what you’ve learnt, and come back with questions.
  • There will be homework assignments and supplementary materials available to browse between meetings.

04 Training Introduction

05 Schedule Modul 1

24 March

1. Modul: Introduction to Approval Testing

  • Test cases check actual program output against a previously approved value, and any difference will fail the test.
  • Normally, a human inspects and approves some actual program output when creating a test case.
  • Raw program output may be processed into a more convenient format before being used for approval and comparison.
  • Design a Printer to display complex objects, instead of many assertions.
  • If actual program output is not yet available, the approved value may be a manual sketch of the expected output.
  • Approved values are stored separately from the source code for the test case, although in the same VCS repository.
  • When a test case fails, you can use a tool to inspect the differences and easily update the approved value.

06 Schedule Modul 2 & 3

31 March

2. Modul: Using Coverage and Combinations with Legacy Code

  • Using coverage to identify missing test cases
  • Using Combinations to increase confidence
  • Work through some exercises adding tests to legacy code using the ‘Approvals’ tool

7 April

3. Modul: Approval Testing for Scripts, APIs and Microservices

  • A command-line script
  • One microservice via a REST API
  • A simple HTML user interface
  • A system made up of microservices
  • Work in an ensemble and explore techniques important for Approval testing like stubbing dependencies and designing printers
  • Write tests using the tool “TextTest” (link to http://texttest.org)

Course Objectives

Intent-Based Leadership® is fundamentally the language leaders and teams use to communicate at work. With this leadership paradigm, team members come to the leader describing what they see, what they think, and what they intend to do. With Intent-Based Leadership, the culture of the organization shifts from one of permission and waiting, to intent and action. Not only does effectivity increase, people also feel better, are happier and healthier.

Our one-day course offers practical, specific Intent-Based Leadership ideas, tools and mechanisms and is based on the neuroscience around how to create environments where people do their best thinking. The result: we begin to move the perspective from performance compliance to excellence through great leadership.

What you will get

  • Learn how to move in an Agile way from their existing culture toward one where everyone is a leader, where people take initiative and ownership, and one which frees up critical cognitive space for you.
  • Build ownership by speaking in a language that increases a feeling of empowerment.
  • Increase team performance and motivation based on the most recent neuroscience.
  • Use leadership tools to create an environment where people succeed.
  • Realize the steps to take when working toward mindset shifts.
  • Understand how you can contribute even more to the success of your Agile organization.

"Jenni provides concrete tools that you can start using right away."

01 Key Learning Points

This workshop is based on our books Fifty Quick Ideas To Improve Your User Stories, Impact Mapping and years of experience helping teams deliver better software. After the workshop, you will know how to:

  • Fight a huge backlog with 500 crap stories
  • Prioritise with multiple competing stakeholders
  • Avoid a user story stream of consciousness and create a big picture for prioritisation
  • Establish a good reporting structure on outcomes rather than just monitoring velocity and activity
  • Get agreement from the whole team and the business sponsors about which user stories are useful and which are just noise
  • Enable business sponsors to benefit from flexible scope and avoid water-scrum-fall
  • Effectively prioritise based on value
  • Avoid pet features
  • Run impact mapping sessions
  • Split the ‘unsplittable’ stories, and ensure that work items are small but actually still valuable
  • Avoid getting stuck in ‘technical stories’
  • Run user story mapping session

02 Schedule

Day 1 morning

  • how to effectively work with a large existing backlog of stories (story card hell) with multiple competing stakeholders
  • how to capture and describe real value with small user stories that just contribute to a larger picture
  • how to measure progress better than with just story points and avoid mistaking activity for success

Day 1 afternoon

  • how to avoid water-scrum-fall where too many things need to come together to make a release and it’s not easy to come up with small but valuable chunks
  • how impact mapping can help facilitate the discussion around value and success
  • how to run impact mapping sessions
  • how to use impact maps to align competing stakeholders and for product discovery

Day 2 morning

  • how to get good feedback from users and how to avoid misleading feedback
  • how to split the stories that are too big but difficult to slice
  • how to avoid technical stories

Day 2 afternoon

  • how to incorporate results of user research into release planning
  • how to use story maps to plan releases for larger pieces of work, when there is significant risk in releasing the wrong product so iterative improvements are not an option
  • how to facilitate story mapping workshops and avoid the most common problems with them

Course Objectives

Working with legacy code remains difficult. We feel afraid to change it, but sometimes we have no choice.

Learn key techniques to help you manage your risk. J. B. Rainsberger gives you a safe code base in which to experiment and he guides you through the confusing risk/reward decisions involved in living with legacy code. You will learn and practise several specific, safe techniques that you can start using on your own legacy code once you return to your project.

What you will get

  • You will receive a safe code base in which to experiment.
  • You will be guided through the confusing risk/reward decisions involved in living with legacy code.
  • You will learn and practise several specific, safe techniques that you can start using on your own legacy code once you return to your project.

"Amazing training - learned a lot about legacy code."

Training participant

Course Details

01 Prerequisites

The practice code base is available in (at least) bash, C#, C++, C, COBOL, CoffeeScript, D, F#, Go, Groovy, Java, JavaScript, Lua, Objective-C, Perl, PHP, PowerShell, Python, Ruby, Rust, Scala, Smalltalk, Swift and VB6, so you should be able to find at least one language in which you’ll feel comfortable practising.

You don’t need to know any fancy frameworks. (That’s probably part of what got you into trouble in the first place.) You don’t even need testing libraries, although you really should probably find one and install it. You only need some patience and energy.

02 Trainer

J. B. Rainsberger

J. B. Rainsberger helps software companies better satisfy their customers and the business that they support. He travels the world sharing what he’s learned about programming, managing his workload, and designing his lifestyle.

He spends a lot of his professional time helping programmers do good work with less stress. Not only does he consult with and train for companies, he also provides personalized one-on-one coaching and online training.

03 Schedule

Each day consists of 4 sessions of 45 minutes separated by breaks. We will combine live lectures with group discussions and individual practice time. You will also have access to a live chat area to ask questions or to signal that you need some help.

Here are the themes for each day.

  • Day 1: Strategies for getting started with legacy code
  • Day 2: Incrementally improving the code from the bottom up
  • Day 3: Incrementally improving the code from the top down
  • Day 4: Organizing the work, navigating the people, and building your rescue plan

J.B. will offer you a legacy code base on which to practise, but you are welcome to practise using any code base you like. You might choose to practise on his code base during the training and then try to apply what you’ve learned to your own code bases the next morning.
