FAQ

What is a Product Owner – simply explained?

A Product Owner is someone responsible for maximizing the value of the product developed by the Scrum team. They represent the customer’s interests and work closely with stakeholders to ensure the team builds the right product that meets user needs.

The Product Owner has three main responsibilities:

  1. Managing the Product Backlog: The Product Owner creates, prioritizes, and refines the list of tasks and features the team should work on, known as the Product Backlog.
  2. Defining and Communicating the Vision: They ensure that everyone on the team understands the product’s goals and vision, which aligns with business objectives.
  3. Making Key Decisions: The Product Owner makes decisions regarding feature prioritization and release planning to deliver maximum value to the customer.

Simply put, the Product Owner is like a bridge between the customer and the development team, ensuring the team builds the right product to meet business goals and customer expectations.

Both the Product Owner (PO) and the Project Manager (PM) have responsible roles, but they differ significantly in their focus and areas of responsibility.

  • Product Owner: The Product Owner primarily works in agile teams and focuses on maximizing the value of the product. They manage the Product Backlog, prioritize features, and ensure the team is implementing the right requirements to meet customer needs. The PO serves as the central link between stakeholders and the development team, being accountable for the product vision and strategy.
  • Project Manager: The Project Manager is often found in more traditional, less agile environments and is responsible for the planning, control, and completion of an entire project. The PM monitors schedules, budgets, resources, and risks, ensuring that the project achieves its defined objectives. Their focus is on coordinating and executing the project as a whole, regardless of the specific products or solutions being developed.

In summary: While the Product Owner is responsible for the „What“ and „Why“ of a product, the Project Manager focuses on the „How“ and „When“ of a project. In agile environments, the role of the Project Manager is often replaced by the Product Owner and Scrum Master, as flexibility and product focus are emphasized.

Summary: The Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) certification from the Scrum Alliance is an internationally recognized qualification that proves your understanding of Scrum principles, product ownership, and value-driven development. This certification shows potential employers that you have the skills to manage product backlogs, work with cross-functional teams, and make strategic product decisions. It helps advance your career by opening doors to roles such as Product Owner, Product Manager, and Agile Product Lead in industries that value agile methodologies.

The CSPO certification is unique in that it doesn’t require an exam to obtain. Instead, after completing the CSPO course with a certified Scrum Alliance trainer, participants automatically earn their CSPO certification.

Details of the CSPO Certification Process:

  • Course Completion: Attend and complete the two-day CSPO course with an accredited Scrum Alliance trainer.
  • Certification Validity: Once you complete the course, you will be awarded the CSPO certification, which is valid for two years.
  • Renewal: To renew your certification after two years, you can attend additional Scrum training or participate in Scrum events to earn Scrum Education Units (SEUs).

The CSPO certification helps establish foundational knowledge and practice in product ownership without requiring a formal exam, making it accessible for professionals looking to build their Scrum expertise.

Yes, we offer several discounts to make the CSPO course more accessible:
