FAQ

What is an Advanced Scrum Master – simply explained?

An Advanced Scrum Master is a professional who not only ensures that the team works well according to Scrum rules but also facilitates a deeper, more impactful use of Scrum principles across the organization. Building on the foundational skills of a Scrum Master, an Advanced Scrum Master actively coaches the team, promotes continuous improvement, and works to strengthen the agile culture within the organization.

The Advanced Scrum Master has three main responsibilities:

  1. Removing Obstacles and Empowering the Team: Beyond simply resolving issues, an Advanced ScrumMaster empowers the team to identify and solve problems independently. They focus on building a resilient and self-managing team.
  1. Advanced Coaching and Facilitation: The Advanced ScrumMaster not only ensures effective meetings but also acts as a coach for both team members and stakeholders, guiding them to improve Scrum practices and promoting agile principles across teams.
  2. Promoting Continuous Improvement: The Advanced ScrumMaster uses metrics, feedback, and retrospectives to foster a culture of continuous improvement and adaptability, helping the team refine its processes and respond effectively to change.

In simple terms, an Advanced Scrum Master is a strategic coach and facilitator who goes beyond daily support, focusing on sustainable team development, agile maturity, and an adaptive organizational culture.

Summary: The Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) certification from the Scrum Alliance is an internationally recognized qualification that builds on foundational Scrum knowledge and demonstrates advanced skills in facilitating agile teams, removing obstacles, and promoting continuous improvement. This certification shows potential employers that you have a deeper understanding of Scrum, can effectively coach teams, and drive agile practices professionally. It helps advance your career by opening doors to senior roles such as Agile Coach or Senior ScrumMaster in a wide range of industries that value agile expertise.

The A-CSM certification process is unique in that it does not require a formal exam. Instead, it focuses on completing advanced training and practical applications of Scrum, as well as coaching and facilitation techniques.

Details of the A-CSM Certification Process:

  • Course Completion: Attend and complete the two-day A-CSM course with a certified Scrum Alliance trainer.
  • Work Experience: Document at least 12 months of experience as a Scrum Master within the past five years.
  • Certification Validity: Once you complete the course and meet the experience requirement, you will earn the A-CSM certification, which is valid for two years.
  • Renewal: To renew the certification after two years, you can earn Scrum Education Units (SEUs) by participating in additional training, Scrum events, or other educational activities.

The A-CSM certification emphasizes hands-on learning and practical skills over formal testing, making it accessible for professionals looking to deepen their Scrum expertise.
